On the occasion of the Research Data Alliance’s Fifth Plenary Meeting, re3data is pleased to report progress in the consolidation of the Databib and re3data.org initiatives into a shared registry and website and to announce the availability of an Application Programming Interface (API) to enable machine access to the merged registry.

The Research Data Alliance/ World Data Service (RDA/WDS) Publishing Data Bibliometrics Working Group is conducting a survey to investigate the viability of bibliometrics for data. We would like to invite all data producers, users, managers and publishers to complete the survey to tell us how you currently evaluate the impact of data, and how you would wish to do so in the future.

The first DOIs for data were minted about ten years ago in the context of the project "Publication and Citation of Primary Research Data (STD-DOI)", which was funded by the German Research Foundation DFG. A study on the feasibility of using DOI for the publication of research data was written in 1998. It is the earliest mention of using DOI for data. The study is now online on the GFZ publications server and can be downloaded. 

The 3rd Plenary focuses on the theme ‘The Data Sharing Community: Playing YOUR Part’ and is about exploiting RDA’s work to date to its full potential. 

Databib and “re3data.org – Registry of Research Data Repositories” are pleased to announce their plan to merge their two projects into one service that will be managed under the auspices of DataCite by the end of 2015.

After 11 months of working together, the Data Citation Synthesis group members have finished the  “Joint Declaration of Data Citation Principles”. 

The LIBER Quarterly has released a future article: "Bringing Digital Science Deep Inside the Scientific Article: The Elsevier Article of the Future Project." 

Representatives of more than 80 governments and 100 participating organizations are gathering in Geneva this week to renew their commitment to GEO, the Group on Earth Observations, a voluntary intergovernmental initiative launched in 2005, and to agree on plans for the next decade. 

Results reinforce the notion that, in the long term, research data cannot be reliably preserved by individual researchers, and further demonstrate the urgent need for policies mandating data sharing via public archives.

Researchers require infrastructures that ensure a maximum of accessibility, stability and reliability to facilitate working with and sharing of research data. Such infrastructures are being increasingly summarized under the term Research Data Repositories (RDR). The project re3data.org–Registry of Research Data Repositories–has begun to index research data repositories in 2012 and offers researchers, funding organizations, libraries and publishers an overview of the heterogeneous research data repository landscape. 

Um in Zukunft die verfügbaren Mittel möglichst effizient einzusetzen und die Realisierung neuer Forschungsinfrastrukturen langfristig vorausschauend planen zu können, hat das BMBF im Jahre 2011 die Pilotphase für die Erstellung einer Roadmap für Forschungsinfrastrukturen gestartet.

Peer review of publications is at the core of science and primarily seen as instrument for ensuring research quality. However, it is less common to independently value the quality of the underlying data as well. In the light of the ‘data deluge’ it makes sense to extend peer review to the data itself and this way evaluate the degree to which the data are fit for re-use.

In separate “big data” presentations at the Digital Preservation 2012 meeting, Myron Guttmann of the National Science Foundation and Leslie Johnston of the Library of Congress described scenarios that seemed futuristic and fantastic but were in fact present-day realities.

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) and the National Federation for Advanced Information Services (NFAIS) have issued a new Recommended Practice on Online Supplemental Journal Article Materials, Part B: Technical Recommendations (NISO RP-15-201x) for public comment until September 15, 2012. 

Dryad now has a button you can use on your list of publications to indicate that the associated data is in Dryad.

The Science as an open enterprise report highlights the need to grapple with the huge deluge of data created by modern technologies in order to preserve the principle of openness and to exploit data in ways that have the potential to create a second open science revolution. 

DataCite and the International Association of STM Publishers are pleased to announce best practice recommendations the two organizations are endorsing to make research data easier to find, link to, re-use and cite.

Am 11.06.2012 fand im Rahmen der Norbib-Konferenz in Kopenhagen ein Knowledge Exchange Workshop “The Costs and Benefits of Keeping Knowledge” statt. Auf diesem Workshop wurden verschiedene Kostenmodelle für die Langzeitarchivierung von digitalen Objekten, insbesondere von Forschungsdaten, vorstellt.

Data are the foundation upon which scientific progress rests. Historically speaking, data were a scarce resource, but one which was (relatively) easy to publish in hard copy, as tables or graphs in journal papers. With modern scientific methods, and the increased ease in collecting and analysing vast quantities of data, there arises a corresponding difficulty in publishing this data in a form that can be considered part of the scientific record.

The digital collections of scientific and memory institutions – many of which are already in the petabyte range – are growing larger every day. The fact that the volume of archived digital content worldwide is increasing geometrically, demands that their associated preservation activities become more scalable. The economics of long-term storage and access demand that they become more automated. The present state of the art fails to address the need for scalable automated solutions for tasks like the characterization or migration of very large volumes of digital content. 

The goal of re3data.org is to create a global registry of research data repositories. The registry will cover research data repositories from different academic disciplines. re3data.org will present repositories for the permanent storage and access of data sets to researchers, funding bodies, publishers and scholarly institutions. In the course of this mission re3data.org aims to promote a culture of sharing, a better understanding of data management as well as increased access and better visibility of research data. 

Databib is a collaborative, annotated bibliography of primary research data repositories. The beta has just been released, and the developers are asking the community to kick the tires and let them know what you think. An interesting bibliography on data citation/publication papers has been compiled via the ICSU CODATA Task Group on Data Citation.

The Australian National Data Service has released Costs and Benefits of Data Provision: Report to the Australian National Data Service by John Houghton.

This analysis tests whether open sharing and linking of supporting data through the PANGAEA® data library measurably increases the citation rate of articles published between 1993 and 2010 in the journal Paleoceanography as reported in the Thomson Reuters Web of Science database. 

Is there a difference in citation rates between articles that were published with links to data and articles that were not?
